Looking Back at the History of Arrowhead Virginia Beach…
Arrowhead Virginia Beach is a neighborhood located in Kempsville, a borough in the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Kempsville is a historic section with neighborhoods built in the 1960s. Originally known as Kempe’s Landing, Kempsville was named after George Kempe, an immigrant who acquired land along the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River in the 1600s. He developed that land into a colonial port, in order to ship tobacco and various other goods.
Kempe’s Landing was split into multiple half acre lots, which were sold at a public auction. The county was known for its production of wheat, corn, and various other goods. In fact, large warehouses used to line the banks of the river, which was much wider compared to the size of it nowadays.
In 1922, Kempsville was a small country village that featured a few general stores, a brick school building, and two churches. The fertile land was perfect for farming a wide range of crops, including potatoes and cotton. In 1963, the City of Virginia Beach was created and Kempsville became one of seven boroughs of the new city.
During the explosive economic growth that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s, Kempsville transformed into a suburban community that’s known as one of the largest independent cities throughout Virginia. Unfortunately, many of the historical buildings throughout the area were moved or torn down at this time.
