Looking Back at the History of Fairfield, Virginia Beach…
Fairfield, Virginia Beach is a neighborhood located in Kempsville, a borough in the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Kempsville, built in the 1960s, is a historic section filled with various neighborhoods, including Acredale, Avalon Hills, Arrowhead, Carolanne Farms, Bellamy Manor, College Park, Fairfield, Indian Lakes, Lake Christopher, Lake James, Larkspur Farms, Point o’ View, Selm, Stratford Chase, and Whitehurst Landing.
Kempsville was originally known as Kempe’s Landing, named after George Kempe, an immigrant who initially acquired land in the area back in the 1600s. He used that land to develop a colonial port wherein he was able to ship tobacco and various other goods. After the area was split into multiple half-acre lots, which were sold at a public auction, a small country village was formed in 1922 - featuring various general stores, a brick school building, and two churches.
In 1963, the City of Virginia Beach was established, and thus, Kempsville became one of seven boroughs of the new city. Although many of the historic buildings in the area have been torn down or moved, it’s still quite a historic, beautiful area.
